C-Team in Title Contention with Strong Win

On Tuesday (11/02/25), Derby C took on Clay Cross B at Derby. Team captain Andre stated that the first player to finish would have the “honour” of writing the match report. I was that lucky person!

On board four, I played a new player in his first ever competitive game.  It was a short attacking game that ended on move 21. A deflection tactic to remove a knight that was protecting the king from checkmate.  I was expecting to win a Knight, however the opponent blundered and the king fell!

The remaining games were much longer!

Andre was next to finish on board three. He won the initiative and was able to go two bishops up, albeit with a minor deficit in pawns. With the pawns about to be equalised, his opponent resigned.

On board two, Chris’s game resulted in a king and pawn endgame, where Chris looked to be favourite to win. However, his opponent was able to equalise and a draw was the outcome.

Last to finish was Carl. Their game was agreed drawn with plenty of material on the board but with both players low on time.

With this result the C team are guaranteed a place in the top four teams who will go on to compete for the divisional title.
