Close Battle in Home Derby

When two teams from the same club play each other, there is always the opportunity for the lower team to cause an upset. Last season the C team inflicted a particularly painful defeat on the B team.

On Tuesday (19/11/24) the C and D teams faced each other. However, the two teams have been formed to be of roughly level strength this year - as such the match was potentially quite balanced.

I will lets Sam (the D team captain) take up the story:

“With the scores tied at 1 each, Alan was heading for a draw and I was winning against Shourya being 3 pawns up.  A victory for Derby D against their own club team Derby C was looking like the most probable outcome . Then a momentary loss of concentration by myself, resulted in a King fork and the game was lost.  Chess can be so frustrating!”

So the C team scraped the narrowest of victories!

Derby C 2½ - 1½ Derby D
1 Marshall, Stuart 1709 ½ - ½ Kennedy, Alan 1662
2 Cockburn, Andre 1533 0 - 1 Sands, Garry 1555
3 Eaga, Shourya 1532 1 - 0 Samra, Mohinderpal 1362
4 Weighill, Carl 1761 1 - 0 O'Donovan, Tony 1340
